The Tall Tale: From Giraffe Girl to Confident Communicator
In Kingston, Jamaica, under the scorching sun, I, at 5’ 11” I was the second tallest girl in my high school, a consequence of my 6’ 4’’ father’s genetics, waited at the back of the line for graduation. My nickname was “Giraffe Girl.”
Despite my desire to blend in, my height set me apart. My mother yearned to standout in her own way, but stifled by societal norms, her dreams were suppressed by my father. Emigrating to the U.S. offered a chance for both of us to find our voices as women of color.
My transformation began as a fashion model, where I learned to honor my height. Transitioning to TV News, I shed my Jamaican accent to conform to the idealized version of an American journalist. But I later realized the power in embracing my unique identity. Success ensued, with Emmy awards and a fulfilling career.
After two decades in TV news and a corporate stint, I witnessed women of color suppressing their voices to fit in. Recognizing this, I founded Brown Vox Media. Our mission is to empower women of color to claim their voices, embrace their culture, and speak their truth. Through tapping into their potential, sharing authentic stories, and transforming their presence, we encourage you to “Boss Up Your Voice,” stand tall, and stand out in a world that often sidelines their voices.
